Israel-Palestine, and Western diplomacy.

The late Conor Cruise O'Brien once said that the Israeli-Palestinian issue is not a "problem" with a solution, but a conflict. Conflicts don't have solutions: they have outcomes. The lines of an eventual two-state territorial accommodation are clear, but the prospects for its achievement are not. Conflict must first be sublimated in politics.

So far as debate about Israel is concerned, said O'Brien, it is an indicator of antisemitism "if your interlocutor can't keep Hitler out of the conversation ... feverishly turning Jews into Nazis and Arabs into Jews".
