The future of Christian minorities in the Middle East.

The new rounds of unrest has caused one sector of the population to fear more than any other, the Christian minorities. In short, they were sold as a political lever by the West in the 1970s, where Europe would not comment on their treatment as long as oil was delivered to their ports. This therefore is a minority that has been left out to dry as will the political winds blow it. They had little choice in the past but to co-opt with the regimes (that are now falling) to save their own skins. It was political expedience and not belief in the system that drove them to make these pacts.

Now there is a growing swell of Salafi Islam in Egypt, it is the Copts who are feeling the hurt, with daily protests against Copts, churches being burnt and the radical Salafis taking the law into their own hands. All the while the Western Christian powers sit around and say nothing.

In Syria teh Christian minority is on the verge of huge retribution from a possible Sunni backlash against the ruling minority of the Alawites and the christian population  that co-opted into the regime, this could turn out as bad as or worse than the situation in Egypt.



There are many christian minorities that will soon no longer exist, the Palestinian population is slowly radicalising, as Hamas comes more into power and with the already drastically dwindling Christian  population, Palestine could soon be free of Christians as well as being judenrhein. And all the while politicians in the West (especially the Churches of the West) who have made pacts with the Muslim rulers continue as if it isn't happening. People forget that democracies are built not to empower the majority but to protect the minorities. This needs to be pointed out to the states in this area and pressure brought to save the minorities from majority rule, where the Salafi Islamists shout the loudest and bring the most force to bear. If these countries want to be democracies then they should bring the institutions of democracy to bear on these Islamists and save the minorities. Else day by day a bit of history will be destroyed, communities going back to the ancient Egyptian past will be lost, all to the detriment of mankind.
